When it comes to optical I would use it and not a sound card if my motherboard didn't need me to do a X-FI MB3 work around for the software suite just to use SBX surround when I gaming. Other wise I stick that Asus Xonar DS in til my issue is handled. The only way I would use the analog output of onboard audio as a backup if something goes wrong with my gustard X12 and only then is if I had either a gigabyte mobo with Core3D or the MSI Motherboard I mention then. There will always be a market for sound card due to features or functionally that onboards might not have. As not every one want that Flat neutral sound or Transparently sound and may want a sound that fit their taste. Plus people will have a different wants for a different sound signature too and may not like the way onboard audio sound even if they have similar features as a sound blaster Z due to X-FI MB3 software suite. The Few that are good enough to me that might be are the Core3D on the gigabyte Snipers and gaming G5/7 motherboards and the MSI motherboard that uses C-media audio codec and the ess sabre dac chip that happens to cost a arm and a leg because of that. I disagree about onboard audio being just as good as a sound card as most are not, when it comes to analog audio when it comes to digital then its a different story. Between the Xonar and the Bifrost uber the differences to me was big but the DS was just a backup card. I notice the differences between the onboard and the Xonar DS easly as the onboard sounded wrong to my ears. While another person can, I have tried my onboard audio with the numark N-wave 360 I used to own and between onboard, Asus Xonar and the bifrost uber I had at the time. Some people can't even with a external dac and good gear. It depends on the said person rather they can hear a differences or not.
